Electrical Contract Manufacturers Expect Revenue to Decrease in 2012

According to an IHS iSuppli EMS & ODM Market Brief report, due to increasing global economic unrest, revenue for electronics contract manufacturers is expected to decline in 2012.  Analysts project that the revenue decrease for the industry as a whole will be less than 1 percent compared to last years 4 percent increase. 

Electronic manufacturing services (EMS) and original developing manufacturing (ODM) sectors are forecasted specifically to experience obstacles in their 2012 revenue generation. Growth for EMS is likely to remain stagnant, while growth for ODM is expected to contract by 2.3 percent.

Auto manufacturers continue to struggle to keep up with demand after March disasters

Japan’s auto manufacturing industry was disrupted greatly by the disasters. Auto manufacturers have decreased production by 14.9%. Damages to plants, recertification issues, and electricity shortages have played a major role in slowing production lines and profit loss.

Toyota expects to cut production by 40,000 vehicles resulting in a profit loss of $72 million. Toyota also plans to close 12 plants nationwide. Honda also announced that it will lose an output of 20,000 vehicles and will not return to normal production levels until after the summer.

Japanese Disasters Still Causing Issues for Auto and Technology Plants

Japan based Panasonic reported Monday they are continuing to experience shortages of parts as a result of damages to the company’s manufacturing facilities after the March disaster. The company expects to see a 60% year–over-year drop in profits. Shortages of parts have affected sales of televisions and mobile handsets. Although the company expects operations to be back to normal by March 2012, performance will be significantly affected for the first six months leading up to September.

Locally, Chrysler Jeep announced it will be closing its Chrysler Toledo North Assembly Plant and Supplier Park earlier than usual for scheduled maintenance and retool due to potential shortages of parts from their Japanese suppliers. Although the company expects its Japanese suppliers to eventually recover, they are also planning to shut down their Perrysburg Stamping Plant for scheduled maintenance later this summer.

Short-term LCD Shortages open opportunities for new suppliers and increases prices

Multiple manufacturers like Renesas are concerned about running out of inventory of electronic components in June. As a result of unmet demands, Renesas fears customers could switch to different suppliers. This could handicap Renesas’ turnovers in the long-term.

Samsung however, expects the LCD market to quickly rebound. This may result in an increase of prices by 5 to 10 percent in the second half of the year because of a LCD panel shortage.
